Sprouting Bodies (2024)

Sprouting Bodies is the title of an exhibition presented at Granderson Lab by Alice Yard in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The exhibition was developed as part of an artist residency with Alice Yard and was the result of three months of research in the fields of critical plant studies and sexual ecologies conducted at the National Herbarium Archive in St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago.

The artworks symbolically depict women as plants and can be understood as a response to both ecological violence and violence against women. The exhibition also included a video projection from the collaborative film project Datura Queen, created together with Trinidadian artist and filmmaker Arnaldo James.

Both the exhibition and the film explore plant knowledge, interspecies relationships, and the coexistence of human and non-human beings through the story of Datura stramonium.
